Growing room

Our current project-du-jour (the master bedroom makeover) isn’t providing many photo-worthy opportunities just yet, so for today’s post we’re going back to the kids bedroom one last time.

A couple of months ago it was all about the layered look we seem to have stumbled upon in there, and then last month I shared a quick DIY curtain project. So the final piece in the puzzle is changing out the cot for a toddler bed. Miss E was happy enough in her cot, but we felt she was ready for the bed, and we needed every bit of space we could get in the spare room (where we’ve moved while our master bedroom gets trashed!).

So while her cot is packed down and standing in the corner of our lounge, the kids bedroom is looking a little more spacious, and colourful and fun and cosy!

I did get a little sentimental packing up the cot – it’s a very definite end to the baby era – but I’m excited for the freedom that comes with the short time between babyhood and settling into school life.

We have a long weekend coming up, and plans to get some plastering underway. Of course if all goes to plan I’ll have photos to share next week!

Until then, adieu x

Just buy a Christmas tree

I’m feeling a bit battered this morning…

But let’s start with a promising beginning!

One sunny Saturday afternoon a few weeks ago I was scurrying around the front yard tidying up here and there… I broke out my loppers on a tree stump that is supposed to be dead but persists with sprouting “branches”. I keep telling it to just give up but it’s not listening (maybe I should call it Master W the Second). Once I was done giving it a real good telling off the branches got put aside instead of joining the ever-growing heap of garden waste on the trailer. I had an idea you see…

The first five minutes went well and things started taking shape quite nicely:

I think you can see where I’m going with this…

Except as soon as I put my hot glue gun down it all turned pear upside-down-christmas-tree-shaped. Those little sticks just didn’t cut it for the base. Sigh… thanks to Andre for coming to my rescue and supplying a solid block of timber (not so pretty but it does keep that tree up the right way):

I hummed and hahhed over the decorating thing for a couple of weeks then decided to keep it nice and simple. I had some red and white striped ribbon I’d been intending for another project… it got cut into flags. And more hot glue later we had…:

… a sailing ship! Not quite what I had in mind so the flags/sails were barely on for two minutes before I ripped them all off again. Are you sensing a theme here? “Try, try and try again” maybe? Or “just give up now”?

The next night… out comes the hot glue gun (I opted for the first theme suggestion) again.

Oooh pretty!

I got to enjoy it for about 36 hours before this* happened.

I have to say this for it – at least it landed on its feet… well, foot. Perhaps it has a bit of cat in it and still has 6 lives left? Or shall I give up now?

The Block NZ: My Room Three

Love the challenge this week of sourcing secondhand or creating your own furnishings. I would have had such fun!

While Rachel & Tyson’s room is definitely not what I’d want in my house I applaud them for going strong with a definite theme and occupant in mind. It is a far cry from Libby & Ben’s room which I have to agree was a bit over-staged. Yes, the house will be for sale, but this is also a competition which the nation is watching – personality please! We need entertaining. Love the desk idea very much though and I am contemplating a copy for our office nook…

As for my moodboard for this week, it’s too easy… all done! With last weeks Room Two being very much a guest room, Room Three is all about kids. Young kids, and one of each gender.

True to this moodboard, our kids bedroom is coming along nicely with a lot of handmade and secondhand furnishings. Once the manrobe (Trade Me glam job, see here and here) is completed I can hang the round mirror above it and then get started on painting the dresser!
