For a king & a fairy princess

My last post got me a bit motivated to move things along another step in the kids bedroom. Actually it was less that, than the fact Miss E’s feet were hanging over the end of her toddler bed – a sure sign she was ready for a “proper big bed”!

So the last couple of weekends have been about furniture shuffling and a little shelf install. Fun times!

And version 4.6 of the kids room is…. here! And today it is tidy, which is as good as you’ll ever get from me. Styling to perfection is not going to happen despite my best intentions. So that creepy dark thing on the wall? It’s not a giant bug – it’s a peacock feather which looks perfectly charming in reality, it just doesn’t photograph well (or look particularly harmless in the middle of the night!).

Here’s how it looks from the lofty heights of King W’s bed (a bit scary to be honest when I’m up there making the bed, but he’s fine with it!):

And here’s my little fairy princess doing her best to untidy the room (which I totally am ok with because it tells me she loves hanging out in here!), and she’s super excited that Version 4.7 gets underway tomorrow with a “princess bed” pick up planned.

0925_7105Let’s hope she can hold that excitement for a while, because Mum’s gone and bought yet another thing that requires some Daddy DIY to get it functional. Stand by kings and princesses!

Small spaces: A dream come true

Living a life on wheels isn’t everyone’s dream. But it’s mine!

Right now, thinking about how life on wheels could (or couldn’t) work frazzles my mind, but it’s there as a “one day” dream… It’s my fall back dream. And actually, it is a dream Andre & I have already had the great fortune to live, for a few blissful (ignoring the fairly regular tantrum days!) months. That was pre-kids, pre-home ownership, pre-proper career, pre-overinflated sense of responsibility.

Now, that over-inflated sense of responsibility gets in the way of such dreams, but I still have hope to quash that and just do it anyway.

Part of my plan is to devour every post and picture that encourages that dream!

This darling home on wheels by Tiny Heirloom, via my scandinavian home, has added a lot of determination. How could it not?! Creature comforts, and a sense of style are not forgotten!

Pin of the day: A vintage style shared kids room

I’ve been on a little pinning spree again this morning… I go for days without even opening Pinterest, and then I go a little mad pinning and scrolling furiously through bucket loads of things I’ve missed! (A bit like how I treat this blog… nothing for weeks on end, then… two posts in a week?!) How do you pin?! Are you like me, or a faithful daily pinner?

Whatever your pinterest style, what we would do without it I don’t know… And my favourite feature is the “Pssst! Looks like you’ve already pinned this!”- because without that my boards would be full of double-ups and even triple-ups! So many images catch my eye over and over, for good reason.

This was one that I tried to triple-pin this morning:

Amazing shared kids room

Via Lovely Life.

The abundant natural light, the giant map wall, the cute vintage beds, the greenery, the floors, the rug, the easy storage baskets under the bed… all of it! Love it.

Pin of the day: Spring living

It’s spriiiiing!!! Despite today’s wintry grey raininess, I’m still excited that down here in the upside-down side of the world we can now officially look forward to summer! It’s just around the corner…

The lengthening of days over the last few weeks means we now (sometimes) have dinner before dark, and on a good day even the birds are still singing! That’s awesome.

So I thought I’d keep an eye out on my Pinterest feed for something springish to share today. Gardens, outdoors, flowers… nope? How about a little living space then?

The light in this one puts it squarely in the spring camp, and the potted tree totally goes with the theme too. I also love the big artwork (it’s so trendy right now) and doesn’t the sofa look comfy? I want that floral cushion…

Hope spring has arrived for some of you with more sun and less rain than is going on in Auckland today?

Pin of the day: Modern farmhouse kitchen

..

Whoaaaa!!! Modern, classic, midcentury – this kitchen has it all going on! My dream kitchen has a big ol’ farmhouse table in it like this one, but I’ve never been a real country kitchen type. Love how this one puts it together with both timeless white and my favourite design era with the pendant and chairs. Oh and the floor? Is that concrete?! Concrete floors in the kitchen are the very best – I should know!

PS. I missed this post on Monday… worth the few extra days though right?!

Small spaces: A brick loft

brick house sectional exterior

That brick?! Inside AND out. Love that.

This one is a small one bedroom loft guesthouse, in San Fran. The architect made use of a small footprint by going up, up, up! On the lower level is the kitchen and living area, and the mezzanine bathroom is accessed by the ships ladder. Up top, across a glass walkway is the sleeping loft. Apparently it’s been described as a treehouse. Pretty amazing treehouse!

I love the texture palette, and the natural colours mixed with bright white. Gorg!

Small spaces: Families sleeping small

I had something else in mind for today, but on further investigation… it’s not as small as it first appears, and I couldn’t think of a good enough reason to include it in this weeks Small Spaces. But have a little look, as there are a few ideas to steal for a much smaller space – like the sunken bath, and some built in furniture.

So, another from my Pinterest filing system…

Cozy sleeping space / via Brooke Brooke on VSCO

It’s the time of year where I start getting itchy feet and think “this year? Will this year be the one we get to go on a family holiday in a campervan again?!” But with little Miss still hit and miss (with sleeping through the night) I’m not sure how relaxing it would be…

So I’m just looking at small spaces instead, and I love this combined sleeping area, for how well it could work for a small family (of good sleepers!).

You could use the lower bed as lounge seating during the day, simply by shifting the cushions up against the sill/shelf along the wall and making it a comfy day bed!

For a family with a couple of littlies, I’d have to make some modifications for safety, add a curtain to pull across at sleep time and ensure the sleeping nook up top would happily take two mattresses as I’m not sure how much sleep they’d get all in together! Another option would be to create bunks, but sacrifice some storage.

Although the storage is one thing I love about this layout!

I also love the white on white with the addition of natural colours and textures. It’s a somewhat surprising (to me) direction we seem to be heading in our bedroom…! And to be honest I’m enjoying the extra space we have in our l’il house with a third bedroom back in action. It’s ok to like small spaces at the same time as liking a few more useable square metres in our fulltime house isn’t it?!
